A guy at work did something like that. Went on vacation for a week, just never returned. Didn’t return phone calls or emails. Eventually he popped up on social media about 6 months later and some coworkers spotted him and got the story. If I remember correctly (which I may not), I think his girlfriend convinced him to stay, so he did, and he just ghosted his job.

I run it on my Debian server that uses my 15 TB RAID5 array as storage. (When I built it, 15 TB drives were a dream…now I have a 12 TB drive in my desktop computer that serves as backup to the array.)

I mainly serve it out to the client on our DirectTV streaming device. Works fine, other than I wish the intro skip plugin would be able to give me the option to skip on that client (the only way it works on the Android client is to have it skip automatically).

I have an old S9 right here on my desk. I cracked the screen, and took it to one of those screen replacement places, and he asked if I had insurance. I told him I didn’t, and he said, wellllllll it’s going to be a lot more expensive than you think to replace this screen.

That wraparound screen they had was basically also the frame of the phone - you’re not so much replacing the screen as you are moving the rest of the components to a new phone body. I wasn’t sold on value of that wraparound screen in the first place; this didn’t improve my opinion of it.

We put a plastic screen protector on it and a new case, and I used it for a few months until we were ready to upgrade phones.

Some kind of miracle, I know. Actually I got more messages, but many of them were either spam or never even made it to a date.

Back when I was in online dating (I got married in 2010, so it has been a very long time), this is how it seemed to work in the hetero arena:

• Women (by which I mean, legitimate accounts from women who were actually looking for dates): Get 1,000,000 messages, approximately 999,900 of which are dick pics.
• Men: See 1,000,000 ads, of which about 3 are legitimate people looking for dates.

So, both could be true in relation to the image.

I remember a guy once telling me that basically you have to respond to EVERY AD and hope something sticks. I never did that, and I felt bad for what the women must have had to deal with when I heard that. I had very limited success - dates with, at most, two or three women, and none of those really went anywhere. I ended up marrying someone from work instead.

Most cars I’ve used with it won’t lock until you put it in drive or start moving at a certain speed; I assume that’s because of incidents like this one.

Oh it’s worse than that. Much of the Milwaukee’s main line was electrified - over 600 miles worth - and the electrification was removed in favor of running diesels.

There’s a huge difference between sitting at a table by yourself (or even with a family member) and, say, sitting next to a stranger in an airplane. Walking through the restaurant and keeping the mask on so as not to catch or give anything in passing is sensible. Greater distance means lower risk.

Yeah a friend of mine noted one good thing out of COVID was that wearing a mask would be normalized here in the US. (She is susceptible to respiratory issues, so she has to be careful.)

Unfortunately…we did not see the current idiot backlash coming.

God. I still think had Trump just said, “Listen to Dr. Fauci” and printed up a billion “Trump 2020” masks, he would have been elected again in a landslide. And we probably would have had far fewer dead people, too.

Edit to clarify: I don’t like him at all. He’s an idiot, an asshole, a racist, and a bunch of other things. I’m just saying he had an easy path to reelection but his ego couldn’t handle it.

Is there a perception that arts are more likely to have gay and lesbian people? Dumbass would do anything to hurt them.

I can’t find the exact quote right now, but I saw in another article he said something like, “If they don’t pay for advertisements, X will be gone. How sad!”

It seems Musk thinks he’s tending another Mona Lisa or some other world cultural artifact that society would hate to lose. Not some website that’s fairly easily recreated by, say, a bunch of hobbyists.

I run an internet forum for a very specific topic. I have to manually register people, because before I did that, spammers would come in and crap all over everything. (Fortunately it’s not a very popular topic, so I only have to register new accounts a few times each month.) I run the forum on my own dime, no advertising or anything, as a side hobby.

There’s also a very active Facebook group. The Facebook group is great for general conversation, but often when a technical question comes up, please just link to the forum where the info is stored. Searching in Facebook is terrible, and what happens if Facebook decides to block access to history for some reason? (Not that they necessarily would, but I’ve seen it happen many times. Remember when Photobucket blocked access to old pictures unless you had a paid account? We lost a bunch of useful pictures on the forum when that happened.)

My mother. She made some bandanas for our dog, and gave them to us a week or so ago. We thought they were cool. Later, she said, “Sorry you didn’t like the bandanas.” I was like, “News to me, I thought they were great.” “Well, they weren’t what <my wife> was expecting.”

I didn’t even bother mentioning it to my wife until yesterday, who, of course, was fine with the bandanas, as I knew she would be. During that conversation, my wife and I talked about how we need to constantly walk on eggshells around her, because who knows what she’ll be upset about next. It’s exhausting.

I don’t know where my mother gets this stuff. The sad part is that this is actually one of the more sane incidents.

She did a bit on Colbert that was a joint venture between her business and his spoof of her business. Either she’s extremely clueless and didn’t realize his fake store is mocking her real store, or she knows it’s snake oil and is continuing to sell it.
